Summer Day Camp Specialist or Counselor

The Bay Area Discovery Museum, located at historic Fort Baker in Sausalito, is a unique educational institution and popular destination for over 280,000 children and adults who visit annually. It is the leading children’s museum dedicated to developing childhood creativity, nurturing future generations of creative thinkers and innovators.

The museum’s camp programs emphasize participatory, interactive learning.  Camp programs are for children 4-9 years of age.  Topics include: art, chemistry, natural science, performance, carpentry and others! Now hiring for Summer Camp June 16 – August 22!

Specialist Job Summary: To implement interdisciplinary curricula through our spring and summer camp programs as a lead instructor. Base curricula will be provided for specialists to expand and develop as appropriate. In addition to the below qualifications and expectations of a Camp Counselor, a Specialist should have the following:

  • Demonstrated teaching skills with children in an educational setting
  • Experience developing learning activities
  • Ability to evaluate and adapt curricula to age appropriate activities
  • Experience working in an outdoor setting desired, but not required

Counselor Job Summary:>To work alongside a content specialist to provide a safe and nurturing environment for children to learn, grow and explore within.  Responsibilities include the following:

  • The care, safety and direct supervision of campers at all times during the camp day.
  • Serve as an appropriate and positive role model for all campers, caregivers and the general public.
  • Work cooperatively to maintain open lines of communication with parents, participants, supervisors and co-workers.
  • Attend all leadership, development and staff training sessions.
  • Care for museum supplies, equipment and facilities.
  • Other duties as required by Specialist and Camp Director.

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with young children.
  • Ability to work flexibly within a team and to take direction.
  • Ability to take initiative to work independently.
  • Mature and hard working attitude a must!

Schedule:

  • Camp runs Monday – Friday, 8:30am- 4:30pm.  
  • Summer Camp is in session June 16 - August 22, 2008.

This is a temporary full-time position; it does not include a benefits package. Salary DOE; Counselors $10 -$14 an hour, Specialists $14 - $18 an hour.
