Free Library Programs

To extend the reach of the Museum into our communities, Museum education staff will be taking some of our most beloved programs into libraries throughout the Bay Area this summer. Program descriptions and full schedule as follows. All materials are provided for participating families and include take-home tips for caregivers, plus a discount coupon for a future visit to the Bay Area Discovery Museum.

Program Descriptions

Fairy Tale Engineering

In Fairy Tale Engineering, young scientists engage directly with the design thinking process as they work collaboratively to solve problems for beloved fairy tale characters. Children will identify characters’ needs that they believe can be solved via engineering design and bring their ideas to life. In this family workshop, children will work with their important adult to stretch their problem-solving skills in a risk-friendly environment to build and test their designs. A Museum educator will lead a whole group story time and then support families as they plan, build and test their prototypes.

Hideouts & Hunts: A Math Adventure

Pin up a den of sheets and climb inside. Toddle over, under and through. Search for buried treasures. In this family workshop, we will go on a mathematical adventure especially designed for toddlers and young preschoolers. A Museum educator will lead a whole group circle time and then support children to explore a variety of early math activities with their important adults. Children and adults should wear comfortable clothes they can move in for this active workshop.

Maker Lab Jam Session: Gravity

The Bay Area Discovery Museum is hitting the road with some of the greatest hits from Maker Lab, our popular Saturday afternoon series at our Museum location in Sausalito. Sample several of our favorite activities which explore ways to utilize and overcome gravity in this hands-on, open-ended, jam session. You might help raise a tower, build a bridge or race a zipline. A Museum educator will lead a whole group circle time before we break out into the hands-on maker stations. In this family workshop, children and their important adults will stretch their problem-solving skills, working together to plan, build and test their ideas. The Maker Lab Jam Session emphasizes meeting new friends, social play and collaboration.

Nature Studio

In the Nature Studio, children and their important adults will notice, wonder and investigate nature’s beauty. Use real tools to dissect a local plant. Conduct close observations of seeds, leaves and flowers. Young naturalists will discover the rich variety of interesting patterns, textures and shapes found in nature. Our hands-on, early science and math activities offer opportunities to compare, sort and classify, and identify and extend patterns. A Museum educator will lead a whole group circle time and then support families to make observations, express their thinking and work together.

Push, Pull, Crash!

Balls, marbles and cars . . . oh my! In Push, Pull, Crash!, young scientists experiment with push and pull of different magnitudes to cause and avoid collisions, create art, and engage in playful exploration of their own powers of force. A hands-on exploration will engage the senses and the imagination! A Museum educator will lead a whole group circle time and then support families to question, problem solve, and communicate ideas at five investigation stations.
