Connections at the Museum

Connections, a comprehensive outreach program, aims to create sustainable relationships between the Museum and the diverse communities of the Bay Area. The Museum invites preschools to visit five times annually to experience child-directed play in our immersive exhibits. Additionally, Museum educators provide hands-on science programming that deepens children's relationship to the natural world. Through exploration, collaboration and guidance from adults, big discoveries happen. And so, our Museum community grows!

Connections in the Classroom

Connections reach extends far beyond the museum’s physical location. Staff members visit the partnering preschools to broaden the scope of the program. Ongoing support throughout the school year helps teachers connect the Museum experience into their classroom curriculum.

What Participants Say

“The [Museum] has given us the opportunity to connect the child, the parent and the school to a wider community, broadening our horizons.” – Patty Scheidler, Teacher, Commodore Stockton Early Education School, SFUSD

“Our partnership with you has been so rewarding; I have only positive things to say about our three years. I have many returning children, and that made having relationships with your staff easier and much deeper.” – Penny Wendell, Teacher, Marin Head Start

The 50,000th Connections Field Trip

The Connections program facilitates more than 8,000 visits annually with young learners from communities that might not otherwise have access to the Museum. Schools in the Connections program serve a high proportion of low-income families and generally serve children of color, recent immigrants and English-language learners. Each participating school has committed to work with the Museum for multiple years to provide focused feedback in order to meet the needs of the teachers, the children, the families and the Museum.

Fall marks the beginning of the year for our Connections program. And the 2015 school year marks our 8th year of partnership with local subsidized preschools. In October 2014 we hosted our 50,000th Connections field trip visit. Thank you to our staff, teachers, and sponsors whose commitment and dedication have provided the opportunities that have enabled thousands of Bay Area families to make the Museum their own.
