FAQs

What if it rains?

Our 7.5 acre indoor and outdoor site is open rain or shine, and our delightful team will be ready to greet you regardless of the weather. Conditions can change quickly under the majestic Golden Gate Bridge on the San Francisco Bay. Please check the forecast and remind your students and families to dress for the weather. While we do our best to accommodate unanticipated circumstances, fees may be applied for events cancelled due to weather.

Where can we eat lunch?

Well over 50 outdoor picnic tables are available across our site. Groups who choose to eat lunch during their pre-registered visit must do so within their allotted time. You may choose to maximize your exploration time in the Museum and opt to eat a picnic lunch after your departure on the beautiful National Park Service land right outside our gates.

Why does my class have to split up into small groups of no more than five children when we explore the Museum?

Experience informs us that children and adults get the most out of their experience in small groups. The active, exploratory, child-directed, time-flexible learning environment our Museum setting provides can be better supported in smaller groups.

Why can’t my group go inside Tot Spot?

Tot Spot is an exhibition area reserved for infants, crawlers and early walkers. In order to provide a safe and welcoming environment for the youngest Museum visitors, school groups are not permitted to enter this exhibition.

School Program Policies

1:5 Adult to Child Ratio

To ensure safety and comfort of all visitors, the Bay Area Discovery Museum requires all school groups to maintain a minimum supervisory ratio of one adult for every five children at all times. We reserve the right to turn away visitors who do not comply with this 1:5 adult to child ratio. When you arrive you will be asked to split into smaller groups of no more than 5 students while exploring the Museum.

Group Reservations

Group reservations must be made two weeks in advance through our online reservation form.

Timed Entry and Departure

Pre-registered group visits, field trips and school programs are scheduled to enter and depart the site in order to maintain a Museum-wide experience capacity. While we will do our best to accommodate unanticipated circumstances, early entry and late departures cannot be guaranteed.

Rain or Shine

Pre-registered group visits, field trips and school programs proceed as scheduled rain or shine. Our 7.5 acre indoor and outdoor site operates year-round, closing only in the event of extreme or hazardous conditions. While we do our best to accommodate unanticipated circumstances, fees may be applied for events cancelled due to weather.

Scholarships

Based on available resources, the Museum offers a limited number of need-based School Programs Scholarships to preschool and elementary schools each year. Preschools serving 50% or more families receiving child care subsidies and public schools serving 50% or more students who qualify for free or reduced lunch are encouraged to apply. Learn more about applying for a scholarship for your school here.

Deposits

A 50% deposit for group visits, field trips and school programs is due at the time of booking. Events are not confirmed until a deposit has been received. A deposit is required 1 month prior to your visit.

Cancellations and Refunds

Cancellations must be made more than 30 days in advance to receive a full refund. While we do our best to accommodate unanticipated circumstances, fees may be applied for events cancelled less than 30 days in advance. Cancellations made less than 14 days in advance will be charged the full amount.

Balance Due

Payment of the balance for Programs for Schools and Teachers is due no later than the day of the event. Failure to pay the balance due will result in a $50.00 late fee.

Memberships and Passes

Museum memberships, passes, coupons or discounts are not valid payment for pre-registered group visits, field trips or school programs.

Travel Surcharge

The Museum has an established travel limit of 25 miles from our location in Sausalito. For off-site events held at your location beyond that 25 mile limit, a surcharge may be applied to the total fee for your event.

Unregistered Groups

Advance registration is required in order to receive the discounted group visit or field trip admission rate. Unregistered groups will be charged the regular admission rate. Unregistered groups are required to comply with the Museum’s minimum 1:5 adult to child supervisory ratio. We reserve the right to turn away groups who are unable to comply with this policy.
