Our Talented Guides

Matthew Robinson

What are your passions outside of work?

  • I love music – I collect an eclectic variety of records for DJing and my own personal use.  I love nurturing my own musical craft by recording with computer software – guitar, vocals, and rhythm.  It’s a very atmospheric and healing sort of music, all about happy stuff and being alive.  It’s contemplative.

 Tell us about your family.

  • I grew up in Huntington Beach, CA, and I was born in South Dakota because my father was in the Air Force.  My dad’s now a firefighter and my mom’s a writer, and I have three sisters.

 What are your inspirations?

  • Comedy, unconditional love and compassion.  I really like Ram Dass, his meditation practices and philosophy. I think of him as my spirit guide.  Also, seeing live performances is really inspiring to me – it makes me want to make something new and special.

What is your favorite thing about the Museum?

  • I find it funny how free-flowing the toddlers are – they have no restrictions on their imagination; they’re so open-minded.  And I love the laughter here, that’s important.  I laugh every day at my job, so every day is good.  People ask me “How was your day at work?” and I always have the same answer.

If you were a fruit or vegetable, which one would you be?

  • An avocado, because you can do so many things with avocados – and it has protein.

What is your favorite film?

  •   Blade Runner

Is there something you look forward to learning?

  • Audio Engineering, in the near future.  I’m trying to find the right school in the Bay Area.  Also I’m interested in Music Therapy, maybe working with disabled kids.  It would take a long time, but it would be so interesting.  Also, I’d like to learn survival skills, like how to survive in the wild and how to use your resources. I’m into sustainable agriculture.

Where would you like to travel?

  • Tahiti and the South Pacific.  Also Holland and especially the northern countries: Sweden, Iceland.  I’d like to breathe in the fresh, cold air, and go for a hike.

What are your hobbies or quirks?

  • Riding the bike.  Getting out in nature, moving the body – getting the blood flowing.

What would you be in another life?

  • I think it would be interesting to be another type of being – like an alien, an extraterrestrial – but enlightened, in a good way.  I would want to help shape the evolution of mankind.
